Desert Vista Dwelling

Glass pavilions in private landscapes.

This elegant residence is situated at the edge of the Phoenix Desert Preserve, poised on an elevated pad that rises above the desert floor. A discreet six-foot drop from the house pad to the surrounding landscape provides a sense of security and boundary, while preserving unobstructed, panoramic views across the preserve from the south yard.

The home consists of three distinct stone volumes, each clad in unfilled travertine slabs, collectively forming a quiet, protective courtyard. Hovering above these masses is a floating canopy of weathering steel, extending from the fully glazed interior into the landscape, blurring the boundaries between the interior and the exterior spaces.

At the edge of the glass-enclosed living area, an “L” shaped pool traces the perimeter, pressing close to the glazing and enhancing the illusion that the interior floats within an oasis. The resulting composition—a glass prism suspended beneath a steel canopy and framed by stone—feels simultaneously anchored and weightless.

Inside, a restrained material palette of ash wood floors, walls, and ceilings is set in elegant contrast to the rugged naturality of travertine, creating a dwelling that is both raw and refined. The architecture engages the desert not as a backdrop but as a living horizon—framing light, space, and silence into a landscape reimagined for habitation.
